Task 10

Well, this task is to write the theme of the book.

As I told before, The main character Susannah's sister Magdalena has been catched of their father while she was having sex with a local boy in Mexico, and then, the father punished her sooo hard and Magdalena used to leave from the family. This made Susannah to become a gay because of she understand it like it will not be allowed to have a boyfriend then she got a girlfriend. Ok, this used to be kind of funny right?

So actually, i think Alice wanted to tell about the discrimination against women at time period 1970s. Both to daughters and the mother was suppressed of their father and the social, only because they are women. So this book is telling about the female equality between man and woman. Especially those black women people in America who was suppressed and discriminated  by both their ethnicity and female. And we can either say that Alice Walker(the author) wanted also to tell us the confidence side of human. We can see that from Magdalena and Manuelito's romantic life in the rest of the story.

Task 8

Point of view

Today i'm gonna talk about the point of view in By the life of my father's smile, i would firstly say that this is an amazing book!!! Although there is no vampires or were-wolfs that i loved for many years, but still, i learned a lot from this book.

"my daughter's dark eyes were wide open. Frank. She allowed them to be mirrors for Pauline. Behind them, of course, she was deep in though."

"I was so astonished by this breach of propriety, especially as I noticed her parents looking on."

"My wife did not see this as a problem. Leave the child alone, she advised as we prepared for bed at night, children are curious!"

By these sentences we can find out that this book is written by the first person point of view. and it seems like the first person is the father of this family. But from the tittle of the book "by the light of my father's smile". you would maybe get a impression like the first person is maybe the daughter, and she will maybe talk like“my father blablabla...”. Or actually that's what i thought!! And that's why i didn't understand the book in the beginning.

By the way i really like this sentence: when life descends into the pit, I must become my own candle, willingly burning myself, to light up the darkness around me.

TASK 5

Setting of the book

welcome back to my blog! Today's task is to write about the setting of the novel. As we always do in our Norwegian lesson. And i would say that it's kind of interesting.

So, I will firstly say that the book i'm reading is kind of weird, because in the first chapter, the first person was named something else who is the mother of Susannah, she was telling the story like: my daughter blablabla ... and Susannah was the main character in the book. Or least in the  first chapter. Then from the second chapter, the main character has changed to Susannah's 15 years old sister Magdalena, and i remember that i have maybe heard something like this name in our english lesson page 18. Well, this is not the point. So Magdalena, the second character, a little young girl who was having sex with a local boy, Manuelito. Oh i forgot to say that Susannah's family moved to rural Mexico from The United stats.

As i said right now, the story was taking place in Kalimasan, which is a little village in Mexico. Kalimasan?? I was so wondered about how can those indians figure out so such weird names as we Chinese do!? Well again that's not the point. I don't really know which time period this story is. you know that i can't really judge out which period it could be only with a few conditions. And i even didn't come so far from the book.

The book is more like a discrimination history of old Latin Americans. And the differences between our world is that we are more modern, and like the world got better than it is before! Cause the Latin Americans don't actually gets discriminated of others now. Of course it's not the only reason. You'll see the rest of this next time while you read my blog.

Task A.

The first chapter of the book

The main character Susannah, she and her family are immigrants from India and then they moved to Kalimasen in America, well, America, i guess. Because the author didn't said anything about what or where Kalimasan actually is.
Well, I just said that Susannah is from India, she remembered the overthrow of their country's monarchy by Europeans in a distant century. Their beautiful country ocupied. Their king beheaded, the gueen repad. Their country stomped on. Then, as if a cycle had ended, collectively they woke up, and they fought back. They became independent, at least in name. And that's why Susannah likes to paint. she always paints the naturally pictures of her country. She still keesps her tradition from her country. The food, the paintings, the music and of course, the dance.
And then, the old American women would ask each other like:
Do they not paint dance where they came from?
Do they not have tasty food?
Have they no remaining vegetation?

Some of the woman even softly snoring beside her and talking about her, staring at her as a monster. Susannah would always then crinkle her brow to show how disgusted they are. However, this not at any time works, because those women never stop talking back her.

by the light of my father's smile -- by Alice Walker

"A jubilant novel ... An evocative family of love, passion and forgiveness --- San Francisco Chronicle .

i picked the book which named "by the light of my father' s smile" by Alice Walker. And the reason is : Firstly, it's not  difficult for me. secondly, i know the author, i read her book ones. Alice Walker, she is the one who won the Pulitzer prize and the American Book Award for The Color Purple. She is the author of many bestselling novels, essays and collections of poetry, even including Meridian. seems like she is a successful woman right?
Well, i found out that the book is telling about a family history. And this is also one of the reasons which made me to be interested in this book. The family stories are often kind of funny and kind of real. so how about this one, Wait me to find it out.
